Around the world, the movement to ban the shark fin trade has gained significant momentum. In North America, key legislation banning sales of shark fin passed in Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, California and several Canadian cities including Toronto. Elsewhere, increased shark protection has been announced in Taiwan, Chile, the Bahamas, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, among other places. WildAid has been at the forefront of this global campaign for over a decade, working closely with politicians, business leaders, chefs, celebrity ambassadors, and the general public, to oppose the cruel and wasteful practice of shark finning. In China, Ding Liguo, deputy to the National People’s Congress, proposed a shark fin ban in March. At a WildAid event this past September in Shanghai, WildAid Ambassador Yao Ming called for a national shark fin ban alongside business leaders Sir Richard Branson and Zhang Yue. And most recently, the Peninsula Hotel chain, Asia’s oldest, announced the removal of shark fin soup from its menus, setting an example for other businesses to follow.
